Friday Letter January 9, 2015

I hope you all had a lovely mini vacation! We are getting back into the swing of things!

Supplies:  We need 17 pink socks & 17 gray socks to make sock puppets. If you can donate a package, we'd greatly appreciate it! We'll be turning them into Piggie and Elephant puppets & students will be writing their own plays.

Here is a re-cap of what we did this week:

Math:  We reviewed skip counting on Monday and took a quick assessment on Tuesday.  On Wednesday we started our new unit on measurement.

Reading:  We read another Piggie and Elephant story: There is a Bird on Your Head.  We are getting familiar with the characters so students can write their own plays.  Students also participated in their weekly reading centers.

Writing:  On Monday and Tuesday, students finished their, Snowmen at Night, stories.  We started to discuss, “How To,” books and students started to create their own, How to Build a Snowman, mini book.  We will finish this next week.

Social Studies: We finished our banyan trees on Monday and began learning about China.  On Friday, we learned about tangrams and students created their own Chinese puzzle pictures.

Science: We started our unit on light.   Students explored the room, deciding what items were transparent, opaque, and translucent.  We will discuss these terms next week.

Have a wonderful weekend! Andrea
